Is Clivia Toxic to Dogs?

Yes — Clivia is moderately toxic to dogs

Clivia is a shade-tolerant plant with clusters of orange or yellow trumpet flowers. Like other Amaryllidaceae members (Amaryllis, Daffodil), it contains lycorine alkaloids. Berries are particularly dangerous as curious pets may eat them.

Symptoms in Dogs

If your dog eats Clivia, watch for these symptoms (onset: 1 to 4 hours):

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Drooling
  • Abdominal pain
  • Tremors (large amounts)

What To Do

Contact vet. The alkaloid concentration is highest in roots and berries. Most ingestions cause GI upset only, but large amounts can cause neurological symptoms.
