Is Coffee Plant Toxic to Dogs?
Yes — Coffee Plant is moderately toxic to dogs
Coffee Plant is a popular glossy-leaved houseplant. All parts contain caffeine, which is a methylxanthine toxic to pets (same class as theobromine in chocolate). While leaf nibbling usually causes only mild stimulation, ingesting beans or large amounts of plant material is dangerous.
Symptoms in Dogs
If your dog eats Coffee Plant, watch for these symptoms (onset: 30 minutes to 2 hours):
- Restlessness
- Rapid breathing
- Heart palpitations
- Muscle tremors
- Seizures (large amounts)
What To Do
Contact vet. Caffeine is toxic to pets — dogs and cats cannot metabolize it efficiently. Even nibbling leaves provides caffeine exposure. Seeds/beans are most concentrated.
