Larkspur is closely related to Delphinium and equally dangerous. The diterpene alkaloids cause progressive neuromuscular paralysis. Young plants contain the highest alkaloid concentrations. Even small amounts can be fatal.

Symptoms in Dogs

If your dog eats Larkspur, watch for these symptoms (onset: 30 minutes to 2 hours):

  • Muscle tremors
  • Stiffness
  • Weakness
  • Cardiac failure
  • Respiratory paralysis
  • Death
